Description
INTRODUCTION A spectacular field of mite activity leading to depletion of plant quality is their potential to rise to the pest status. The vegetable mite, Tetranychus neocaledonicus has now been recognized as a widely distributed mite species on a variety of economically important plants comprising vegetables, tuber crops, fruit crops, oil seeds, spices, garden plants and weeds (Rahman and Sapra, 1946; Sidhu and Singh, 1972; Jeppson et al., 1975; Puttaswamy et al., 1976; Pande and Yadava, 1976; Puttaswamy and ChannaBasavanna, 1980; Ray and Rai, 1981; Sharma and Kushwaha, 1984; Manjunatha and Puttaswamy, 1989). The wide range of distribution coupled with the severe damage potential to the host plants has elevated its status as a serious pest in the tropical and subtropical countries of the world. Moringa oleifera Lam, the current host plant of T. neocaledonicus, has been distinguished as one of the world's most useful plants. The plant is well known for its multipurpose attributes, wide adaptability, and ease of establishment. Being the fastest growing of all trees, it commonly reaches 3 metres in height, just 10 months after the seed is planted. Furthermore, it has more than a dozen important uses and high nutrient value, being rich in proteins, vitamins-A, B and C and minerals like calcium, iron and potassium, essential for growth (Freiberger et al., 1998). Feeding activity of the vegetable mite on M. oleifera led to the formation of conspicuous white spots, manifested through chlorosis of the leaves. Affected leaves exhibited chlorophyll loss and subsequent drying up and shedding (Puttaswamy and Reddy, 1980).
